Being on the paeds/OB floor has been the greatest experience of my schooling so far. I'm so happy I got to meet each and every single one of the nurses, doctors, porters, and patients especially! I absolutely LOVED taking care of the newborns every day in OB! There's nothing more precious than a one day old baby. I especially loved seeing how his or her parents interacted with them, and it was such a joy being there during that huge milestone in their life. They were all so accepting of having students around completing the care and also being there during labour & delivery! The L&D experience I had was amazing. The parents were adorable, and they didn't know the sex of the baby beforehand, which created the biggest element of surprise and it was awesome to see their faces when the baby finally arrived!! This was the most amazing experience of my life. I wasn't sure how I would feel about it at first, but honestly with the wonderful staff that was helping out they guided me in everything that I could do as a nursing student. The doctor was amazing too and explained every little thing she was doing to both the mom (who was a science teacher so she was super interested in everything) and myself who had never had this experience before. All in all, this was my favourite nursing school experience by far, and I am so excited I got to be a part of the birth of their baby boy :)
Paediatrics was a little bit less joyful for families coming in, however the parents and their children were amazing. The kids were all so adorable!! It was really sad seeing them coming in sick, but I knew that we were taking really good care of them and they were getting better and better every day they were there. My final paeds shift I got to go to the OR & watch a tonsillectomy + adenoidectomy & bilateral myringotomy + tubes. The ENT doctor (who also did my tonsillectomy 3 years ago :]), was amazing and encouraged me to get right in there to see everything he was doing. The OR nurses and anaesthesiologist were all wonderful people and I'm so thankful for the experience!
I just wanted to get all of this out & I am seriously considering either becoming a midwife, working in OB, or working in paediatrics when I'm done nursing! It's such a wonderful experience & I wish I could be there for the rest of my schooling!
